FSSAI registration or licence: which one does your business need?

Packaged Indian food products beside a licence folder and magnifying glass

Every food business operator in India needs either an FSSAI registration or an FSSAI licence before it starts operating. Which one you need depends mainly on your annual turnover and the kind of business you run.

The three categories

As a general guide, the categories are:

  • Basic registration: petty food businesses with annual turnover up to about Rs 12 lakh.
  • State licence: medium businesses, typically turnover between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 20 crore.
  • Central licence: large businesses above Rs 20 crore, plus importers, exporters and units operating in more than one state.

What to keep ready

Identity and address proof, premises proof, a list of food categories, a food safety management plan and, for manufacturers, the layout plan and list of equipment. Thresholds and document lists are revised from time to time, so always confirm on the FoSCoS portal before you apply.
